There are many reasons why you may have “swiped right” on an entrepreneur or freelancer.  On paper, they’re about as impressive as their CV: highly driven, charismatic, and able to make their dreams happen. Plus, they are often well-dressed too!

However, there are also many challenges associated with someone who has committed to the entrepreneur lifestyle, with many finding them difficult to date.

What are the challenges of dating an entrepreneur or freelancer?

Their work comes first.

Many entrepreneurs operate on a work-first mindset. This means that when they wake up in the morning, they’re more likely to check their work phone than they are to send you a sweet “good morning” text.

At first, you may find this attractive. It’s incredibly endearing to see someone who knows what they want and how to get it. However, it could sometimes mean that your relationship is put on the back burner in favor of business pursuits. When you’re committing a lot of time and energy to a person, this can be frustrating. After all, it could mean that you have to settle for spending a lot of time on your own.

What schedule?

There’s no such thing as a 9-5 work day for entrepreneurs. In fact, a recent study found that “25% of entrepreneurs log more than 60 hours per week.” As such, this often means that they’ll spend more time working than they will with you – which can be hard at any stage of your relationship.

After all, quality time is key to building lasting, meaningful relationships, and it can be hard to make time for it if your partner is working late into the night. In fact, you may find that they routinely cancel or reschedule date nights or, at the very least, have their work phone in hand during them.

In addition to their “regular work,” they’ll likely spend a lot of time networking at local or industry events. This means that you can’t exactly expect to have dinner together each evening unless you are their plus one.

They crave spontaneity.

If you’re looking for stability in your daily life, you may benefit from dating somebody with a more conventional job. Entrepreneurs are the world’s go-getters, which means that getting stuck into the same old routine is likely to bore them.

However, this isn’t always a bad thing. It could mean that one minute, you’re committing to a night at home in front of the TV, and another, you’re on a wild date-night adventure.

You’ll have to get up to speed on business lingo.

As mentioned above, entrepreneurs and business owners don’t really have an off switch when it comes to work. As a result, they’re likely to talk “shop” a lot, even during day-to-day conversation. This means that you’ll need to get up to speed on business lingo in order to follow along and contribute.

However, their conversational skills do not mean that they’re immune to miscommunications either. After all, the business world and the romantic world rarely overlap. This could mean that you find it harder to tap into their emotional side.

While it usually takes a bit of time for romantic partners to open up completely, the timeline tends to be extended for entrepreneurs. This is because you may not be able to spend enough quality time together to get to the “deep” stuff. Those dating freelancers and entrepreneurs may, therefore, present additional challenges when it comes to opening up or ensuring that your emotional needs are met.

What is dating an entrepreneur like?

While there are many challenges associated with dating an entrepreneur or a freelancer, it’s important to note that there’s a lot of fun to be had, too.

As mentioned above, entrepreneurs are highly charismatic. This means that they’re great conversationalists, even on first dates when the nerves may be high, and conversations could otherwise become stilted and awkward. More often than not, this charisma also means that they are funny, too – and there’s nothing more attractive than someone who can make you laugh.

Dating someone who isn’t afraid to chase their dreams also means that you can build an exciting, prosperous future together. After all, this means that you can work together towards shared goals that fall outside of the professional world.

In addition to this, dating an entrepreneur can be incredibly exciting. They’re likely to make last-minute plans that take you to places you’ve never been before or encourage you to step outside of your comfort zone.

Final Thoughts.

In short, dating an entrepreneur can be difficult. You’ll have to accept that there’s a third party in your relationship (their business) and that there will likely be times when you come second to this. They’re likely to work long, unsociable hours and will nearly always have their phone in hand when off the clock.

However, this doesn’t mean that you have to turn your back on dating them. There’s a lot of fun to be had when dating an entrepreneur, too, especially when it comes to indulging in the finer things in life or being a little more spontaneous.

If you’re considering dating an entrepreneur, it’s crucial that you set healthy boundaries at the beginning of your relationship. Let them know what you expect from your romantic partners, and ensure that they are willing to commit to this. This way, you can ensure your needs are met, and there’s no room for miscommunication or misunderstandings.

Of course, it’s also important to remember that relationships are often about compromises. This means that you’ll have to be willing to adjust to their needs and expectations too (within reason). Either way, establishing these rules and foundations ahead of time (such as asking for a minimum of one date night a week), can help you to build a strong, trusting and most importantly fun relationship with your partner.
